TENSE: Past Indefinite (Simple) Verb ‘To be’

কোনো ঘটনা অতীতে ঘটে থাকলে সেই ঘটনার ক্ষেত্রে আমরা past indefinite (simple)-এ বাক্য গঠন করে থাকি। বাংলায় অতীত কালে কেউ কোনো কিছু ছিল/ছিলেন কিন্তু এখন নাই বুঝালে আমরা তার জন্য ইংরেজিতে to be verb-এর দুইটি রূপ was, were ব্যবহার করে থাকি। মনে করুন আমি একসময় ছাত্র ছিলাম কিন্তু এখন আর ছাত্র নই। তাহলে এই বাক্যটিকে past indefinite (simple)-এ প্রকাশ করতে হবে। এই জাতীয় বাক্যে First person singular number এবং third person singular number-এ ব্যবহৃত হয় was। আর অন্য personগুলোর বাকি numberগুলোতে ব্যবহৃত হয় were। যেমন:

Affirmative

• Negative-এর ক্ষেত্রে was, were-এর পর not যোগ করতে হয় অথবা was not, were not-এর পরিবর্তে যথাক্রমে wasn’t, weren’t ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন:

• হ্যাঁ সূচক প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য তৈরির ক্ষেত্রে was, were বাক্যের শুরুতে বসাতে হয়। যেমন:

Affirmative-interrogative

• না সূচক প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য তৈরির ক্ষেত্রে was, were বাক্যের শুরুতে বসিয়ে subject-এর পর not বসাতে হয় অথবা বাক্যের শুরুতে wasn’t, weren’t ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন:
